A Little History of the WWB Mixed Doubles Tournament

The tournament was first played in 2022, when invited teams squared off and WWB showcased some of the matches so women could learn from watching pairs play. It was a resounding success, and so we expanded it in 2023 to include both an Intermediate division, and open entry. It's great backgammon play, and conversation between team-members that will educate the spectator. Enter. Watch. Share.

You can check out a number of the matches from the last two years of the tournament on our YouTube channel.

How to Participate

  • Click here to register where you will indicate, Championship or Intermediate Division and you and your playing partner's names, Heroes nicknames, emails, and phone numbers by March 1. We have a committee to oversee entries and ensure every competitor is in the right division. If one team member is an intermediate and the other a championship player, the team will play at the highest player's level.

  • Matches are scheduled for one match per month, starting in March 2024, on the second Tuesday of each month, at 7 PM EST. If you are in a different time zone and unable to make the scheduled time, accommodations are made and matches are scheduled at the convenience of both teams and the tournament director.

  • Form your own team (one woman, one man), or reach out womensworldofbackgammon@gmail.com, and we will help you find a partner.

  • All Matches are played on Heroes 3. If you are new to Heroes, we will help you set up a free account and provide training for this popular online server. Just playing on Heroes will open up a new world of online backgammon playing enjoyment.

  • There are two divisions in this online tournament, Championship and Intermediate. Last year we had a total of 24 teams, 18 Championship and 6 Intermediate. This year, we anticipate an even larger field.

  • Entry fee is $100 per Championship team and $50 per Intermediate team. Eighty percent of the entry fees go into a prize pool for the top winners; the remainder covers tournament expenses. For interested Championship teams, there is an optional additional prize pool of $50 per team.

  • Fees should be submitted by March 8 through PayPal family and friends  (account kd@cmwf.org), Venmo (account Karen-Davis-419), or Zelle (account 917-488-5364 karen.davis@jhu.edu).

  • The Championship division format is 9-point matches, single elimination. The event is capped at 32 teams; if space is available, first-round losing teams may buy-back. The Intermediate format is 7-point matches, single elimination, The Intermediate division is capped at 16 teams; if space is available, losing teams may buy-back. Communication is by Zoom with breakout rooms, brackets by Challonge, and Heroes3.BackgammonStudio.com server in the WWB External Tournament Room. Clock settings are 15 seconds per play plus 27 minutes reserve time for Championship division and 21 minutes reserve time for Intermediate division.
