WWB Peer Coaching Program

After announcing the WWB Peer Coaching Program in November 2023, we received an overwhelming response from women eager to participate, along with several experienced players who voulunteered to serve as coaches.

The program officially launched in February 2024, pairing up to a dozen women - primarily intermediate and novice players - with dedicated mentors. Participants meet weekly on Friday's at 6pm EST via Zoom to play Consultation Mode matches on the popular backgammon platform Heroes (heroes.backgammonstudio.com).

Consultation Mode is a powerful learning tool that provides immediate feedback after each move, identifying the optimal play and highlighting errors.

Minor Mistakes (< .03 PPM)

Moderate Errors (.03-.08 PPM)

Blunders ( > .08 PPM)

Coaches help players recognize possible alternatives and understand the reasoning behind the strongest moves. As ones observer put it, you can't make the right play if you don't see it.

The Clinic sessions follow a doubles match format with two women volunteers playing two other women volunteers. Karen chimes in with questions or tips. Women observing the match also occasionally make comments or ask questions.

Group Peer Coaching Clinics have distinct advantages. Participants meet other women and are starting to arrange to play matches with each other. They benefit from the group discussion of possible plays and the merits of alternatives.

As the Peer Coaching Program continues to grow, we’re excited to introduce new opportunities for connection and development, including quarterly peer coaching tournaments and the ability for participants to partner up as study buddies.

We are also exploring the addition of structured women’s dedicated practice sessions to further enhance the learning experience. More details to come soon.

One of the unexpected benefits of the U.S. Peer Coaching Program has been the strong sense of community it has created. Women are not only stepping into competition, but also sharing what works, supporting one another, and celebrating each other’s successes. Through these weekly sessions, genuine friendships and connections have formed, with many women continuing to play and practice together outside the scheduled meetings.

What began as an idea in 2023 has, in less than three years, grown into a thriving community of women building confidence, claiming their place at the tournament table, stepping into commentary roles, and helping pave the way for the women who follow behind them.

We'd like to extend a our sincere appreciate to Stephanie Blackton for her incredible work coordinating the Peer Coach Program. As the central point of contact, she keeps everything running seemlessly - sending updates, organizing sessions, and creating a welcoming, enjoyable environment for all participants. Thank you Stephanie!
